Strengthening Exercise : continuation

Hamstrings and Quadriceps exercise : Flexion and extension of  knee

Here is a list of knee exercises which can be used to strengthen the joint and surrounding muscles, either following an injury, or in order to prevent an injury occurring. Common knee injuries include a torn  Anterior Cruciate Ligament ( ACL), MCL sprain, Meniscus tear and Patellofemoral pain.
All of the exercises shown here work the muscles the knee joint, mainly the quadriceps and hamstrings, but also the groin and calf muscles. The exercises start off easy with those that are more suitable in the early stages of injury and gradually progress to more challenging exercises.
All knee exercises should be performed slowly and under complete control. Always start on a low weight or resistance and gradually increase this over a number of sessions. The number of repetitions of the exercise you perform can also be increased. If there is any pain in the knee then stop immediately, although it is not unusual to feel some minor discomfort and aching when starting to strengthen the knee after injury.

Strengthening Exercise

Strengthening exercise is an exercise to built up muscle strength on its ability to contract. This exercise is essential element of rehabilitation programs for person with impaired function an and integral component of conditioning programs for those who wish promote or maintain health and physical well-being, potentially enhance performance of motor skills, and prevent or reduce the risk of injury and disease.

Biceps exercise : Dumbell curl

Starting Position: Simply begin by holding dumbbells in both hands.

Form: Exhale and slowly bend your elbows towards your chest. Hold briefly at the top of the motion, before slowly lowering to the starting position.

Tips: Move in a slow and controlled manner. If you move too quickly, momentum will take over and your biceps will actually work a less when momentum takes over. One of the main compensations during this bicep exercise is arching the back to assist in lifting the weight. If your back moves, that is a sign that the weight is too heavy, so try a lighter weight or do less repetitions on the next set.

 Abdominal exercise : Sit up

The sit-up is a strength training exercise commonly performed with the aim of strengthening the hip flexors and abdominal muscles

Steps in sit up exercise :

  • Lie on your back on a padded surface, bending your knees to about 90° with your feet flat on the floor. Don't anchor your feet, because doing so will bring leg and hip flexor muscles into the action.
  • Choose the position of your hands and arms according to your abdominal strength. The closer your hands are to your head, the more difficult sit-ups become. As a beginner, rest your hands at your sides. When you get strong, you can cross your arms across your chest. Eventually, cross your arms behind your head with each hand on the opposite shoulder if you're able.
  • Don't, however, interlace your fingers behind your head. When you do, you tend to pull on your head, which can stress the neck and cause injury. Pulling on your head also makes the abdominal muscles work less.
  • Start each movement slowly, as if you are in slow motion.
  • Focus on using your abdominal muscles only. Close your eyes and visualize the abdominal muscles tensing and shortening like slow-moving cables through a pulley that draws your shoulders and head off the floor.
  • Exhale while the abdominal muscles contract and pull you upward. This will suck the muscles inward, ensuring involvement of the deeper muscles. Inhaling may cause your abdomen to protrude, leading to overarching and strain of the lower back.
  • Stop about halfway to the upright position about 6 to 12 inches off the floor and tense your abdominal muscles. Hold this position briefly, then lower slowly to the floor. As the abdominal muscles begin to tire, you may not be able to rise to midway, but go as high as you can.
  • Upon returning to the starting point, touch the floor lightly with your upper back and head, keeping the abdominal muscles tense, then begin the next movement.
  • If you find that sit-ups are too demanding, try doing only the curl-down phase. Assume a sitting position by pushing yourself upward with your arms. Slowly lower to the floor, keeping your abdominal muscles tensed. Return to the up position and repeat.
  • Don't overdo it. One set of 5 properly executed sit-ups or curl downs is enough at first. Add 1 sit-up each workout until you reach 15, then add more sets. When you can do three sets of 15, change hand positions to add resistance.

CAREER IN PHYSIOTHERAPY

        Is physiotherapy the right career?

It’s a big decision to choose a career, so unless you have always known what you wanted to do it is worth finding out as much as you can about it.
Physiotherapy is the most popular degree course in the UK and the last numbers I heard were about 18 applicants for every place. This means it is very competitive and the universities can be picky in who they choose to admit.
If you are going to succeed in getting onto a physiotherapy course you will need to have a combination of academic achievement and personal experience and initiative.

                                                Passive movement

What qualities you need to be a good physiotherapist?
  • People will not judge us by only our physical appearance when it comes to job. We must remember that knowledge plays a very important role especially when we are going to practice what we have studied before. As a physiotherapist, we must be a broadminded person because we need to deal with all types and ages of people, and a talent for relating to those with illness or disability. Make sure you have a good understanding of physiotherapy across all areas.
  • You need to be flexible, motivated and work as a team player. It also helps to have a good level of fitness. You must have an interest in body movement, sport and people if you want to be a sport physiotherapist. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential. It's important to be able to work under pressure coping with the demands of athletes and coaches, as well as managing injuries.
  • A good physiotherapist always has to concern about her or his responsibility towards their work. You must always be prepared to give up your time for free to gain as much experience as possible. Persistence and dedication will pay off.

Do physiotherapist works at hospital only?

If it is what you keep thinking about, then the answer is “NO”. There are many other places that you can work at. For example, you can be at physiotherapy centre or you can work with athletes and sports professionals. Your role focuses on injury management and prevention and performance enhancement. You can run a clinic for any strapping or taping required for the athletes. The clinic will also deal with sporting injuries resulting from overuse and trauma. Besides that, you can also attend the sporting event, watching from the sidelines. You can be a part of the pitch-side management team. This means you are on hand if any of the athletes need assistance, perhaps resulting from a previous injury or an accident during the competition.

                                                         How physiotherapist works?

Physiotherapists are as essential as doctors in helping recover and rehabilitate a patient from a state of incapacity, due to genetic defect or the result of an accident or an illness. They must have a thorough knowledge of the human anatomy and the way the bones, muscles and nerves move. Physiotherapists treat a wide range of ailments, so specialization is possible in areas such as pediatrics, geriatrics, orthopedics, sports physical therapy, neurology, clinical electro physiologic and cardiopulmonary therapy.

The job of a physiotherapist, which is preventive, restorative and rehabilitative, is challenging but lucrative at the same time. They are qualified to perform a history and physical examination, conduct assessments to determine a diagnosis process, select appropriate physical therapy interventions to treat the dysfunction, and monitor the effectiveness of treatment.
